Gaggenau Lift Oven

Every time you open the oven door, some heat escapes. This is one of the many reasons that baking times can vary from person-to-person for the same recipe, as there is no telling from a writer’s standpoint how long a person will leave his or her oven door open while trying to fit in cake pans and baking sheets. Kitchen manufacturer Gaggenau has come up with an absolutely gorgeous oven that tries to solve this problem. The Lift Oven is built to utilize the fact that heat rises and, instead of having a door that opens on the front of the oven, it has a base that lowers to open and raises to close – leaving the hot air in the preheated oven above. Better yet, the manufacturer suggests mounting this oven above the counter, so the platform comes down to your level for loading and unloading and completely eliminating the need to bend down or to reach into a hot oven.

The oven opens and closes at the touch of a button, and Gaggenau says that it has 11 different heating methods, including a convection setting. It also has a glass-ceramic base, which you can put cookies, breads, pizzas and other baked goods on – no baking sheet required. The only real drawbacks are the the oven is only 24 inches (many out there are larger, so it might not be idea for very large roasts, etc.) and it costs over $4,000. That said, there are plenty of ovens that are even more expensive, and this is still a great looking oven, not to mention an addition I certainly wouldn’t mind having in my kitchen.

    holy moly! what a great invention…but what a shocking price! but this is one of those things that a few more bucks (ok, a few thousand more) is absolutely worth it…

    in my house rental that we currently live in (temporary) there is a 1978 Gaggenau convection oven. It’s so old and drives me crazy. But the newer Gaggenau ovens are supposed to be very good ovens and so are the dishwashers.

    Looks cool but I don’t know how well it would work in an actual kitchen. You need to leave room under your oven now just so that you can open it.

    This was a prize(?) today on The Price is Right and I thought it was the stupidest thing I’d seen in ages. That’s why I’m looking it up, and why I am here.

    It’s not attractive. It looks like someone’s idea of futuristic, circa 1978. Not to mention that the stainless look is on its last legs.

    You get one tiny surface for your food. No racks for multiple pans at once.

    And the worst part about it? If you saw it in “action”, you would know – it raises and lowers at about the speed of a dead tree sloth.

    It’s ridiculous.

    Ok, well if you saw it in action, you see that it has expansion room for more shelves on it? And if you wanted it to move faster, you could ruin baking! This is designed for a cook, not a critic. Stainless on its last legs?? Umm the only thing that could be more hot right now is oiled bronze, or having panels to hide your appliances but that is very rare to see in a home, and quite expensive. Obviously out of your league. Don’t bash a product just because you feel like it. Put some thought into your comments first.

    Great idea for the handicap. No need to worry about burns when trying to remove things from conventional ovens when sitting in a wheelchair. Also, you are able to can preserves and jams without the worry of handling a large pot of boiling water. It will cook a 20 lb turkey according the the manafactures brochures…I am really considering purchasing one no matter what the price!

    That’s one interesting oven, all right. Like Ryan said, I wonder how it works in an actual kitchen situation. I’m all that certain that the amount of heat preserved would really matter much. Also, you’d have to have the right setup in your kitchen to utilize this oven. That is, be able to place it higher than usual. But as I say, it certainly is an interesting concept.
