  • Chocolate isn’t the only filling that can end up inside of a croissant. Picky Cook made Lemon Brioche Rolls, which are a variation on a croissant theme. The rich dough isn’t as flaky as the dough you might usually associate with a croissant, but it suits the lemon curd filling because it holds it in nicely, and the overall shape of the roll is the same as a croissant. Store-bought curd will do for this recipe, but a homemade curd would be a wonderful touch to it since the dough is made from scratch.
  • If the usual chocolate chip cookies just aren’t inspiring you to get in the kitchen and bake, a more unusual cookie might give you a jump start. Spicy Ice Cream‘s Fig, Ginger and Macadamia Cookies feature chopped dried figs, candied ginger and buttery macadamia nuts for a cookie that is a little crunchy, a little chewy and a little spicy. They’re slice and bake cookies, so the dough can be made in advance and chilled, then baked off whenever it is convenient for you. These would make great ice cream sandwich cookies.
  • Whenever you see a “friendship” bread, that usually means that it features a sourdough starter – one that has been divided and shared with a friend at some point in the past. Sourdough is a great thing to have around because not only does it enable you to make sourdough bread, but it can go into so many other recipes. The Amish Friendship Chocolate Muffins from Pennies on a Platter, for instance, are a great example of a sweet dish that uses sourdough. The muffins are moist, very chocolaty and light. You would never know that there was sourdough in them unless you shared that with a friend, too.
  • Marshmallow flavors are usually limited because adding extra ingredients to the light, fluffy candies can have a negative impact on their consistency. I was very impressed by Evan’s Kitchen Ramblings‘s Passionfruit Marshmallows, which are both homemade and come in a very unusual (and delicious) flavor. Unlike my usual recipe for homemade marshmallows, this recipe uses egg whites at the base. There is actually passionfruit pulp mixed into the marshmallows to give them their flavor, and it looks like you could substitute other strained fruit purees to end up with a whole variety of flavors with this recipe.
  • Use Real Butter‘s Lemon Mousse Bombe is a lovely example of a gorgeous dessert that looks a lot harder to make than it actually is. The only special thing you need to make it is a dome-shaped candy mold to give the bombes their shape. White chocolate coats the mold to create a smooth dome. The chocolate is filled with a creamy lemon mousse, a few raspberries and is finally finished off with a thin layer of lemon chiffon cake that keeps the filling inside. The bombes are turned out so that the cake is on the bottom and you end up with a beautiful piece that looks like it could have come from a four star restaurant – and tastes like it, too.

The bombe recipe is simply spectacular! I really want to try that the next time I have a dinner party. It doesn’t look like they are ridiculously hard to make, but the result is a real showstopper!
