  • Juicy, ripe strawberries don’t find their way into cooked pies all that often because they don’t tend to hold up all that well to long baking times. The strawberries become mushy, give off all their juice and start to lose their color when overcooked. But short cooking times can do wonders for the berries and What Geeks Eat took advantage of this by baking a Strawberry Galette. This type of pie is not baked in a pie plate and has a much shorter baking time than usual, while still delivering sweet fruit in a flakey crust.
  • I never would have put beer and brownies together, but the Brewberry Brownies at Visions of Sugar Plum showed me that it can definitely be done – and that it works. The brownies have blueberry beer in them (a widely available beer maid by Anheuser Busch, actually), a white chocolate frosting and a topping of fresh blueberries. Unique and definitely an interesting change of pace from a standard brownie!
  • The name of the Cheese Stuffed Crusty Rolls posted over at Technicolor Kitchen should be enough to tempt you into baking them. Who wouldn’t want a crusty yeast bread filled with cheese and herbs? Patricia actually challenges everyone to try making them and not eat them straight out of the oven. The smell, combined with the gooey melted cheese, will make it a hard challenge to meet.
  • Bananas Foster are ripe bananas that are cooked in brown sugar and butter until bubbly, finished with a splash of rum and then (usually) served over ice cream. The warmth of the dish is wonderful with the ice cream, but it’s the flavor combination that makes the dish a winner and Culinary Concoctions decided to take all of them and put them together into a Bananas Foster Coffee Cake. A batch of real bananas foster is made and folded into the cake batter, which is then topped off with a thick streusel topping. Serve it for brunch on its own, or heat it up and serve with ice cream to call it dessert.
  • I don’t know what it is about them, but this summer I can’t get over how beautiful everyone’s popsicles look when the post homemade recipes to their blogs. Two Fat Als’ Blueberry Lemon Popsicles are no exception. The popsicles look gorgeous with a combination of pale lemon ice and deep pink ice – stacked in stripes to best combine the flavors, no less! The lemon part of the popsicle is pretty much like a lemonade, so this is a recipe you can easily adapt to your favorite lemonade flavor combinations, playing with strawberries and raspberries.
  • Beer Bread is a wonderful type of loaf. It’s a quick bread, so it only takes a few minutes to make, but it has a tremendous amount of yeasty flavor from the beer itself. Beers and breads are not usually celiac friendly, but Gluten Free Mommy came up with an excellent variation of the bread that uses no gluten at all. Her Gluten Free Beer Bread starts with gluten free beer and can be used with many different types of gluten free flours. Her instructions are detailed and there are lots of great GF bread baking tips in the post.
