Holiday traditions and favorite recipes

holiday cookie plateEarlier this week, I briefly mentioned that Christmas is one of those holidays where a lot of people stick with the same traditions year in and year out. You might add a cookie recipe or two to the rotation, but there are probably at least one or two dishes that you always have to serve – if not an entire meal – to make the holiday complete.

Christmas dinner is open to interpretation for my family, but Christmas breakfast is always a big batch of crepes. Jam and nutella are my personal crepe-eating staples (although sugar, butter and lemon juice combined are outstanding, as well), while other relatives prefer to wrap their crepes around breakfast sausages and eat them with maple syrup (i.e. “pigs in a blanket”).

Main meals aside, there are a few recipes that always show up in my holiday baking. Orange Cranberry Bread always gets served with coffee early in the morning, holding us over until breakfast is ready. Cookies include Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, biscotti and gingersnaps. Marshmallows, of course, are absolutely necessary for topping off hot chocolate.

Share your must-have holiday favorites in the comments, and be sure to include a link if you have a recipe or photo posted on your blog or in a Flickr account. I always love to see what other people are enjoying, and it never hurts to have a few ideas. After all, there is always room for another couple of cookies around the holidays.
