Holiday Gingerbread Cookie Contest!

plain ol’ gingerbread men

It’s been months and months since I’ve had a contest here on Baking Bites and the holidays seem like the perfect time to give something away. After all, it never hurts to get an extra gift for yourself after making/buying presents for everyone else, does it? So without further ado, I’d like to officially kick off Baking Bites’ Gingerbread Cookie Contest!

The contest is a simple one. All you have to do is bake a batch of gingerbread cookies – from my gingerbread man recipe or another favorite – and decorate them. Be creative and use icing, sprinkles, food coloring, tiny gingerbread man-sized clothing – anything you can think of. Then, take a picture of your creation and upload it to the official contest photo gallery. All submissions should be in by December 18th, at which point they will be judged by an anonymous (and hungry) panel of judges. A winner will be announced by December 20th and hopefully the prize will be shipped out in time for Christmas.

Speaking of the prize, the winner will get a Cookie Loves Milk t-shirt (alas it’s a chocolate chip, not gingerbread) and a copy of The King Arthur Flour Cookie Companion, which is a fantastic volume of cookie recipes and baking tips that specifically relate to all things cookie.

Update: A winner has been chosen!

**Fine print: I’m not going to be a stickler about gingerbread as the base for your cookie. If you really want to use a slightly spiced sugar cookie dough or a chocolate dough, be my guest. After all, you’re the one who is going to be eating them, so make sure they’re a kind of cookie that you like! The cookies must be decorated, however, and it is preferable to use cookie cutters to shape them.

The winners will be contacted via Flickr account/email (registration is free, if you don’t already have one). Any other questions, ask away in the comments, otherwise stay tuned to the site for some decorating ideas over the next few weeks.

Are you willing to post prizes overseas?! (as in, to Australia?)

It’s funny that you write this today. I have a batch of little Gingerbread Men heading into the oven today! I look forward to submitting my little guys for review and seeing what other creative ideas everyone has!

Michelle – Overseas is no problem. Australia, Europe, Asia, etc. is all absolutely fine!

(I have to say that I’d expect Aussie gingerbread men to have board shorts on instead of scarves, though (kidding!).)

Ooooh, I would so love to do this, except the only experience decorating that I have involves a nine and a ten year old, and bowls of colored frosting. Not exactly art. 😉 Can’t wait to see the entries, though!

I think I might give out bonus points if kids decorate the cookies!

Unfortunately the kids aren’t my own and are too old and “cool” to decorate cookies with their bake-aholic cousin now. Ah well. Maybe my fiance and I will give it a go and see if we can’t come up with something entertaining. Give you a good laugh while you tally. 😉

Oh poo… I wish I would have noticed this post last week! I made Gingerbread cookies, but didn’t spend a lot of time decorating them. If I have time, I’ll make some more. What a fun contest! can’t wait to see all the decorated little cookie people.

Okay, Nicole, I think I’m flickr-deficient. I’m *sure* I uploaded my two pictures to the group, but when I follow the above link, I can’t see them. I also can’t see some photos (other people’s) which I am sure I saw yesterday…. am I clueless or what???

Michelle – Probably some kind of Flickr bug? If you still can’t see them, let me know.

I can only see the photos I posted when I’m signed in – even although they are set to ‘public’ view. Can anyone else see them?
